Rules & Details

We are greatly excited about your participation in this year’s holiday dessert competition at the “Christmas on Main” experience in downtown Monroe. There is much deliciousness to be enjoyed as the jolly bakers and candy-makers of Union County showcase their very best Christmas treats.

This email will outline all the information that you will need to know in order to prepare for the event. Please read the following information carefully. If you have any questions, email

This year’s bake-off features three age brackets and four dessert categories. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cash prizes are awarded for each age bracket only. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes are not awarded for each dessert category. Cakes, breads, cookies, candies, and bars submitted within each age bracket are judged against each other. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each age category will be selected by a panel of local and skilled chefs. Additionally, we will also present one contestant with the “People’s Choice Award”. This particular cash prize will be determined by event attendees who visit the dessert tent and purchase dessert samples from our contestants. “People’s Choice Award” is determined, in part, by the amount of samples available to attendees. We have been told that “Christmas on Main” traditionally attracts 1500 to 3000 attendees. This is why it is important that you bring a minimum of 75 samples of your dessert.

1st place in the Adult category (18+) wins $500.

1st place in the Teen category (13-17) wins $200.

1st place in the Youth category (9-12) wins $150.

“People’s Choice Award” wins $100.

Because the bake-off is a featured attraction for “Christmas on Main” guests and because the bake-off is intended to raise money for community programs, all contestants should plan on providing a display dessert and 75 to 100 2oz dessert samples. These samples will be provided to event guests for purchase and enjoyment. For your dessert samples, A Cause for Tea will provide all contestants with 2oz plastic cups, plastic bags, paper doilies, stickers (for sealing the plastic bags), and baking trays (for transport of samples). Contestants must visit the teahouse at 418 East Franklin Street Monroe on either Monday, November 29 or Tuesday, November 30 anytime between the hours of 9am & 7pm to pick up their dessert packaging. Cakes, Breads, and Candies should be placed within the provided 2oz plastic cups. Cookies and Bars do not need to be placed in the 2oz cups. ALL dessert samples should be placed on the provided paper doily and then placed inside the provided plastic bags. (Place the 2oz cup on top of the doily and inside of the bag.) Plastic bags should be sealed with an A Cause for Tea sticker that we will provide. Because our tea house is not yet open to the public, all of these packaging items will be made available to you on the front porch of our tea house. If you require assistance, please knock at the front door.

All dessert samples and your display dessert should be brought to the dessert tent on Saturday, December 4 at 2pm. The dessert tent will be located at the intersection of Jefferson and Main streets. (Look for the historic courthouse and you will find us.) You can drive up to the dessert tent with your display dessert and dessert samples and members of our A Cause for Tea team will be present to assist you. It is important that your dessert samples are packaged BEFORE you arrive at the dessert tent on December 04.

For our judges, it is important that you provide a display dessert. This means that your display dessert should be “presentation ready” for the judges as a complete work and brought on a plate or in a baking dish/pan. A Cause for Tea will provide stands and/or boxes for displaying your dessert entry. Please bring your dessert on a plate or in a baking dish/pan. This is an important detail. Please label the BOTTOM of your plate/dish/pan with a piece of tape or a sticker with your name written on the tape or sticker. This ensures that we get your plate/dish/pan back to you at the conclusion of the competition. Display desserts should be brought to the dessert tent along with your dessert samples at 2pm. Judging will occur before 5pm. Contestants should not be present during the judging. Contestants are encouraged to return to the dessert tent by 5:45pm. Please dress warmly and festively. You will be positioned by your dessert entry inside the dessert tent. We are sure that the public will enjoy engaging with you about your dessert entry. The dessert tent opens to the public at 6pm. Contest winners will be announced prior to the lighting of the Christmas tree. The tree will be lit at 8pm.

Lastly, we will need to know the name of your dessert. Please send us your dessert’s name BEFORE Tuesday, November 30. You can email this information to us at The email should include your first and last name. Please ensure that you use the same first and last name that you used when registering for the competition.

We are so thankful for your participation and we look forward to sharing this fun holiday experience with you. If you have any questions, please email us at
